Monitor PPI Calculator

Pixel density decides how sharp a screen looks. Enter the screen size and resolution to see its PPI, the size of each pixel and the physical width and height of the display.

How to use it

  1. Enter the diagonal size of the monitor in inches.
  2. Type the resolution or tap a preset such as 1080p, 1440p or 4K.
  3. Read the pixel density, pixel size, real dimensions and aspect ratio.

Which PPI is right?

A 24 inch 1080p monitor has about 92 PPI, a 27 inch 1440p monitor about 109 PPI and a 27 inch 4K monitor about 163 PPI. For gaming at a normal desk distance, 100 to 140 PPI is a good range: sharp enough to hide pixels without asking too much from your graphics card.

Size, resolution and your graphics card

More pixels mean a heavier load. A 4K screen has four times the pixels of a 1080p screen, so the graphics card has to work much harder to keep the same frame rate. If you want high FPS in demanding games, 1440p is often the sweet spot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate PPI?

Divide the diagonal length of the screen in pixels by its diagonal size in inches. The diagonal in pixels is the square root of width squared plus height squared.

What is the PPI of a 27 inch 1440p monitor?

About 109 PPI.

Is 1440p better than 1080p for gaming?

It is sharper on 27 inch screens, and it needs a stronger graphics card. Many players consider it the best balance.

What is pixel pitch?

It is the size of one pixel in millimetres. A smaller pitch means a sharper image.
